The Lyceum:
Otherwise known as the "lycei summi artes" or Lyceum of High Arts, this school primarily teaches young aspiring mages and sorcerers of many walks of life as they grow from inept to adept before graduating and allowed to apprentice with a master.
Originally, The Lyceum was founded in 1520 by Queen Madeline of Pendula after acquiring a large parcel of land in north Lavensdale, Havilund after a brief struggle leading to the full control of the tip of the peninsula to the nation of Shareem. The school has been touted as one of the true safe havens of the peninsula even in times of war, often passed over by armies due to fear, reverence, and even respect.
The school has one of the largest libraries of the peninsula and is rumored to hold many relics safe within its walls. The lyceum is home to educators of most every school of magic and is credited with the discovery and refinement of many modern magics as well as the creation of many magic-based technological advancements, especially in the fields of science and medicine. The school's primary funding is through military research and is touted for the creation of "The Paragons"
The Paragons - Overview:
Originally brought to light in the 17th century, the paragons were often considered to be an old wives tale of twin wizard/warriors who seemed untouchable and unparalleled on the battlefield. The Paragons became commonly known after the first conflict of the Caellyran war in the early 21st century. Though the Lyceum is within a nation outside of Caellyran rule, Paragons hold allegiance wherever they see fit and during the Caellyran war, there were accounts of Paragons fighting each other in open combat.
Paragons are teams of mages who are trained, as the name would suggest, to be the ideals, equals who work in perfect harmony to better themselves and surpass all others. Teams are made of one Maven and one or more Arbiter.
Paragons - Mavens:
Mavens, on their own are a skilled mage that often begins their training at the academy after proving their skill in far more than one school of magic. Mavens are hand chosen only by previous mavens, an act that was passed on through hundreds of years of tradition. There have been accounts of Mavens taught through the academy becoming beloved and renowned leaders of nations and even some that have made a name for their selves only through a path of blood and destruction but often, Maven's will not directly admit to their association with the lyceum outside of its walls, leading many to claim the school to harboring a secret society bent on the control of the world. Of course, such accusations have been proved as false time and again.
Though the Mavens are revered as the face of the paragon teams, their true power lies within their team mates, the Arbiters.
Paragons - Arbiters:
The Arbiters, unlike the Maven, often are not hand chosen for their skill in magic, rather they are chosen for a special ability known as "The Catalyst". This ability is rare, so rare that the number of Maven allowed entrance into the academy is based off of the number of Arbiters within the school. Some arbiters only possess their special ability when in tune with a sibling, allowing some Paragon teams to be made up of one Maven and multiple Arbiters.
Arbiters are taught to fight with martial arts and melee weapons from the first day they are brought into the Lyceum. On the surface, this would seem completely opposite from the Maven's training, but the Catalyst's influence changes it all. The Catalyst, when the Arbiter and the Maven are in perfect synchronization of will, shall directly increase the ability and power of the Maven. In return for such increase in strength, many Mavens learn to conjure weapons for their Arbiters as well as apply enchantments and spells of protection to their team.
While in perfect synchronization, the paragons are nearly unmatched in combat even to this day, but the loss of synchronization on the battlefield has proved to be certain death for teams in the heat of battle.
