In 500 years, the planet of Spyridon has suffered for over 100 years in drought, causing a massive climate change to take place. No longer is the planet a fertile haven, but now it has become mostly desert lands. There are oasis spots along now shallow rivers, more like streams, and thick jungle-like forests near the coasts, but otherwise, it rains but once per year. Most mountain ranges have been lowered significantly by filling with sand, or, in some cases, vanished completely. To travel the deserts you need knowledge, as bandits from Aranova, Antalousa, Lynmar, Salovando, Ysacniver, Taedry, Ceabrylla, and Meunyr travel freely, having been desert cities for over 1,000 years. The oasises can be found near bodies of water, such as large lakes, rivers and seas. Temperatures in the desert areas get up to over 100 *F during the day, and can drop to near 32 *F at night. Only the strong and smart survive on Spyridon anymore. Machines, exist...but should they need an energy form to run, you'd better have one on hand at all times. Oil is the main source of energy. And it's sometimes used as payment as well as for burning...there are many types of oil. Not just crude oil from the ground. Whale oil, animal fat, even the fat of the dead can be made into oil. Water is even more prescious. Massive drilling platforms sit upon old lake beds and river beds, pulling up the platinum-valued liquid. In the desert cities mentioned above and around these left-over water supplies would reside the wel-to-do people, and those who work for them or their businesses. Outside these places, unless a way to live was found, would be the occassional village or city that is remotely prosperous, usually enroute to one of the thriving ones...sustained by the commerce of trade. All modern technology exists...but the electric companies allow for only 1 hour of electricity per address per day, otherwise resources will diminish.
Most races would've survived if they'd've learned to live that way in the 500 year change. And so the elves, humans, vampire, demons, dwarves, halflings...everyone would still exist. Though I'm sure they'd have moved around a lot.
Classes are the same, except that there seems to be a link between magic and this drought. The link has been getting more and more apparents...magic is destroying the world. Each time a spell is cast, each time a mage or a cleric uses his or her powers, it is destroying Spyridon. The people of the past abused their powers. And now the people of the future are paying for this. And thus, those caught using magic are typically captured by an elite force which storms in, dragging the user away. They are taken to a registration building and cataloged...a tag embedded and an ear cuff made from a nearly indestructable alloy is placed upon them...this tag itself, causes powers to be unuseable. There is no way to remove it except by perhaps cutting the ear off.
And thus Spyridon has become.
