Here is an explanation of your Control Panel which is found when you click on the Members button, located in the posting frame of the chat.

Read through and visit the links as explained, and then on to the dropdown menu that the arrow is pointing to.
Character Chains: This is great when you have more than one character who you'd like to rp at one time, and it makes it so that you don't have to have open multiple windows (IE or Firefox) or tabs (Firefox). As long as your characters all have the same password, put the handles in the blanks and click OK. It will alphabetize them for you. Now when in your chat screen, and you click the pull down menu for Chain, you will see this (with your own handles):

You simply select the character you'd like to switch to and the image, color and link will automatically change with it, as long as your cookies are enabled. Very handy! I use this constantly.
Next we look at that drop down menu in the Control Panel again and go to Edit Preferences (which should be automatically shown). This is the screen:

This is where you fill in your contact information. It does NOT have to be seen by people in the chat. If you want the icons under your handle in the avatar, simply click the appropriate boxes below as shown. If you've made your own character bio, you can either link it to the image when you logon, or you can put it in the Site space. As for Skype, it's a peer to peer voice talking service. You can download it and use it free here (http://www.skype.com/download/). As for the circled section above, the only ones you should mess with are Bold, No MotD (the top portion with the banner and marquis will vanish...opening up more text lines to be seen...especially for low resolution monitor settings), and Italics (which I didn't mark off, but should be). Advanced is too unstable, I don't know what Alternate does (again, if you do, post!), Simple (takes away functions, not suggested), Underline (annoying to read in the chat), and Reverse Output (this can get confusing...it posts the new stuff at the bottom). In that bottom check off section, it's pretty self explanatory.
Next sections of the Control Panel dropdown menu are "Edit profile" and "Edit Profile in HTML Field." These titles are a little misleading. This is where you can make a character bio. The first is for those who know html code and can make a page from scratch. The 2nd is a "What you see is what you get" kinda thing. But it can be annoying from times. Best though to use when first starting. You can hold your mouse over the tiny icon tools to see what they are. If you want to delete your character's bio, there's an option at the bottom for that, as well. Warning...once gone, it's gone.
Changing your password...pretty self explanatory. You'll be told to give currant one, and then asked for the new one twice. When you first logon, you might want to do this so you can change the random password to something easier to remember.
Log Out...logs you out.
