In addition to the regular Control Panel Functions, admins and Chat Masters have different functions than a normal chatter. This is a run down of your abilities. We'll start at the control panel. You'll notice you have more options than a normal chatter. These are the added abilities:
Adding Users is easy. From the CP (Control Panel) pulldown menu, select and click OK. Type in their Handle (Name), the wanted Password, and their email address. You also select a faction for them, and User Level (either OOC, Member (standard), Moderator, or Administrator.). In SRIF, I like to use the Registration button instead of this functions. However, for OOC characters (for Character Chain purpose...as OOC chat is to be kept to a minimum) it's okay.
The Application List if a list of those who have sent in a complete character application, been accepted, or been declined. In SRIF, I accept most applications. However, if the content of the application is questionable, the one applying should be contacted and the matter discussed and agreed upon before accepting. They do not need to resubmit their application. Therefore, what you might read in the applications isn't exactly what you'll see in characters of the chat. You click a handle that's applying, read over their info, then click the appropriate choice. If it's way off...decline it.
Sending Emails...this function's not generally used but is useful if you want to send an official email from the chat. Honestly, I've not used it much. So I don't know if you can send multiple emails at once. I assume you'd just put the addresses into the To: line, seperated by comas. This is one reason it's important everyone has email addresses in their applications also. I believe you can use handles. Not just email addresses. I just IM or email from my hotmail account if I want to send them, personally. However, if you don't want your return email address known, this is the way to go.
Lookup Name2IP is the admin's best friend. You can go to this window to see what a person's IP address is when you want to perma ban them, instead of just using their ident number. This is better because some people's idents change, or if they use AOL, and you ban their ident, you could be banning a lot of aol users since they share the same ident. You can also see the lurkers...this is fun because they show in the total count, and you can sometimes check in other chats and get an idea of who it is, suprising them with a greeting.
Manage current users allows you to reset passwords, change a person's faction or put them in one if they hadn't been before, or change a character's name. Resetting passwords id generally the most asked for. It resets a password to "defpass." Anything in the Manage Current Users section will show up on the CPanel Log, showing when it was done and who did it, also what was done. This is to protect the users, incase of character theft.
Manage Icons is not for the Icons the whole chat can use. It's for personal icons. In SRIF, for example, the AMEA members have small orange squares beside their names. No one else does. This is because they have a personal icon. Sherra has a sword icon, because she owns the weapons shop. If you decide to add personal icons for someone, please make sure it has a black background, and is around the same size as the AMEA icons or Sherra's. Which means that when using it in chat, you won't see much if any of a line break between posts.
Edit MotD and Edit MotD in HTMLArea. These 2 edit the top portion of the chat where the logo is. If you do not know html, edit it through the HTMLArea option. I would ask that the marquis be the only thing messed with and DO NOT SAVE if you mess up, just close the page. You can find the Marquis in the regular html setting (not htmlarea), near the bottom. Just look for the words you saw scrolling. It's actually kind of easier to do this...doesn't require HTML knowledge all the time, and the words aren't scrolling in the editor.
Now, under the Control Panel (not the dropdown menu) are Settings, which for some reason, can no longer be changed by admins. Only Chat Masters. Truthfully, this is fine as there's really nothing admins would be doing on there untill editing the chatroom.
The Options section can be however and it looks like this:

I've typed up explanations beside each section on the image iteself. The only thing that might be used by an admin in Options is the language filter. Under Miscellaneous, the Restricted Area choice is for making the chat restricted to either members only (registered only), open for all, or whatever...it's on the menu. Chat Age Rating...obvious. And actually it's all explanatory.
Icons is the next section an admin can use and it looks something like this (this is a capture from SRI's Icons list):
i5.photobucket.com/albums/y154/myimages2005/iconedit.jpg
I've explained on the image what the Icons list does and is for.
Language is also Admin useable...it looks like this:
i5.photobucket.com/albums/y154/myimages2005/language.jpg
There's really not much you'd do in this section...it can screw a lot of stuff up. The ones with the red dots are the safest ones to mess with and are kinda self explanatory. They control the logon message, logout message, what it says when you're banned...etc. I would prefer it that unless you know what you're doing, not to mess with it.
The Admin Log. If you see something's been messed with but don't know who's done it, go to the admin log. This is what it looks like:
i5.photobucket.com/albums/y154/myimages2005/adminlog.jpg
The CPanel Log is a looooong list of all the accepted applications, added users, password resets...etc. If you go there, you'll get the idea. This is VERY important if someone says they can't access their handle, or that their password's not working. Be sure to check this first, before doing anything else. You can use your browser to run a search under Edit, for the handle of the one in question, and look for anything suspiscious (such as password resets that were not requested or handle changes that were not requested).
That's about it for Admin controls. You can go to the Manual button in the chat to see what functions you can do as an admin, while in the chatroom.
- Add User
- Application List
- Send Email
- Lookup Name2IP
- Manage Current Users
