I've read a lot of books over the years but not all have been great. This is a list, however, of those books that I'd recommend, which I really enjoyed:
In no particular order, though I've tried to list the books in order under their authors:
J.R.R. Tolkien:
The Hobbit
The Fellowship of the Ring
The Two Towers
The Return of the King
Sir Giles of Ham
The Adventures of Tom Bombadillo
Jean M. Auel:
Clan of the Cave Bear
Valley of Horses
The Mammoth Hunters
Plains of Passage
Shelters of Stone
(Books are anthropological...about a girl who is raised by Neanderthals and then goes on to find her own people. There's a movie called The Cland of the Cave Bears starring Daryl Hannah...a wonderful movie but see the movie first. It doesn't do the book justice. If you read first, you may not want to see the movie. I do wish however they would make following movies, but Auel was rightly ticked at the way the first was edited and changed.)
Sue Harrison:
Mother Earth Father Sky
My Sister the Moon
Brother Wind
(there are 3 others I've not read yet of her's, but I have them, they are: Call Down The Stars, Cry of the Wind, and Song of the River)
(Books are ancient historical fiction, but not as boring as it sounds. Indian tribes of Alaska and the islands off of its coast survive the ice and wind and a girl, in love becomes pregnant, but which is the father? Her lover or her brother who raped her to curse her? Excellent series following this group of people!)
Mary Mackey
The Year the Horses Came
(I'm currently reading book 2, which is "The Horses at the Gate," and will be reading the 3rd book next, "The Fires of Spring.")
(Great series of ancient Europe during the days of nomadic and fishing tribes. A young girl must warn a fellow tribe of an impending attack forseen by her mother of whom was from that tribe. She befriends one of the attacking tribe members who turns against his warring tribe to join the peaceful one for his love of the girl...there's more to this than that...)
Anne Rice:
Interview with the Vampire
The Vampire Lestat
Queen of the Damned
Tale of the Body Thief
Memnock the Devil
The Vampire Armand
Merrick
Blood and Gold
Blackwood Farm
Blood Canticle
The Witching Hour
Lasher
Taltos
(her newest release as of November 1st 2005 "Christ the King: Out of Egypt. She has a Sleeping Beauty Trilogy out, under a pen name, but while it's certainly an...entertaining version of what happens after Sleeping Beauty awakens, it's sometimes disturbing.)
Anne McCaffrey
Dragon's Flight
Dragon's Quest
The White Dragon
(Good series about dragons! These dragons kill a threatening spore-like seed called Thread which scortches and burns things as though it were acid. The men and women who ride the dragons to help destroy it are deeply connected mentally and emotionally to their dragon bretheren. Easy reading until the 2nd half of book 3)
J.K. Rowling:
Harry Potter and the...
...Sorcerer's Stone
...Chamber of Secrets
...Prisoner of Azkaban
...Goblet of Fire
...Order of the Phoenix
...Half-Blood Prince
Pearl S. Buck:
The Good Earth
(Excellent book with a movie version out there that's so-so. The movie really is a bore. I really don't understand why they'd make something that boring out of a book that good. Ah well. Fictional historic Chinese poor farmer's father buys him a slave bride. They farm until droughts hit and they cannot bring in any money, having to flee to the south to survive. When they return, it's to a suprising outcome...they become rich. Drugs, concubines, and salves become the norm and the once poor farming man forgets his roots. I really can't do the story though justice by explaining it. There's so much to it! And it's been 10 years since I read it. Read it...it's great.)
Peter S. Beagle:
The Last Unicorn
(How do I even begin?? There's an animated movie of this out there, and it's old but superb. I feel like I've re-read the book each time I see it. Worth seeing 100%. Leaves a few things out but it's not a big deal. The story is pure fantasy. Unicorn discovers she's the last, befriends wizard and wench, chased by a red bull, wizard transforms her and...well I don't want to give anything away. Read it. See it.)
And for now, I think that's about it. My plan currently is to read "The Horses at the Gate" by Mary Mackey, and "Christ the King: Out of Egypt" by Anne Rice, then the first 3 books of "A Series of Unfortunate Events." And I would also like to read a few books by Dan Brown, as well. So LOTS of reading to do.
